library in burundi (140m²)
In cooperation with BC Architects
The library, which is part of a future school for deaf children, was commissioned by a Burundian NGO and constructed over a five month period. It was built by the local community, using local materials and construction techniques.
The library is organized along a covered circulation space. This traditional Burundian outdoor porch is the scenery for everyday life and provides shelter from the heavy rain and sun. The high ceilings and perforated facade contribute to a natural ventilation.
Indoor you can find a wooden seating nook existing of different levels. From here children can climb into an immense hammock fabricated in traditional sisal rope and read books with a view on the Burundian 'mille collines'.
